Working With Moving Lights

Part 1, Moving Lights 101 will be a discussion and demonstration of the basics of moving light technology and control. Moving Light Programmer Cory FitzGerald will give us an inside look at the Studio Color and Studio Spot fixtures, and discuss the various components of different moving head and moving mirror fixtures. Cory has extensive experience with the Wholehog III, and will outline for us the significant developments in this console versus the Wholehog II. Cory will also discuss the use of palettes and techniques for executing cue sequences. Lighting Designer Ed McCarthy will share his thoughts on what a designer needs to understand about the console in order to cue efficiently. Video projections will allow close-up viewing of the board and the lighting units. The video display of the Hog monitors will be presented on a large screen.

Part 2, Working With Your Programmer Lighting Designer Ed McCarthy will team up with Cory FitzGerald to demonstrate and discuss designer-programmer collaboration. They will show us prepared cue sequences and we will observe as they create new moves and edit the existing ones. The video projections will allow us to see both the keystrokes Cory uses to execute the commands as well as the output on the Hog's screens. This demonstration will include the use of several different types of moving fixtures including the Vari-lite 1000 which has programmable shutters. In the latter part of the afternoon, the audience will be encouraged to participate by suggesting cueing ideas and using the vocabulary introduced during the day. Ed and Cory will entertain questions throughout the presentation.

Please note that the workshops are lectures and demonstrations. While there will be opportunities for individual questions and an up-close look at the Wholehog III, "Hands on" will be limited to a few participants depending on attendance.

Theatrical Lighting as Applied to Architectural Lighting Concepts and Designs with Paul Gregory

Join us for an exciting evening with Paul Gregory as he discusses the tools and skills necessary for a theatrical lighting designer to cross over to architectural lighting design. Whether you are looking to expand your career through pursuing architectural design consulting or if you are considering changing careers completely, Paul is certainly the most qualified in the industry to help you with a transition from the theatrical to the architectural.

Paul Gregory's philosophy of design reflects his belief that a sense of drama and theatre is inherent in successful architectural projects. Trained in theatrical lighting at the Goodman Theatre School of the Art Institute of Chicago and in Architectural Lighting Design at the Parsons School of Design, Paul spent a number of years designing lights for regional theatres such as Alley Theatre, StageWest, and the Goodman Theatre before founding Focus Lighting, Inc. of New York. Since founding Focus Lighting, Inc., eighteen years ago, he has designed such projects as the Toy 'R' Us Flagship store in Times Square , Tribeca Grand Hotel, The Mohegan Sun Casino, Phase 1, Le Cirque Restaurant, to mention just a few in a long list of award winning designs.
